Lent 2013

Before 1000; Middle English lente ( n ), Old English lencten, lengten  spring, Lent, literally, lengthening (of daylight hours).

Today is Ash Wednesday the official beginning of lent. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation for the annual commemoration of Holy Week i.e. Passover and of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the perpetual commandment in the Old Testament to keep the Passover. Passover was celebrated in the New Testament by Christ and his followers during Seder or the last supper.

During Lent, I commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penitence this year I am giving up beer and television.

The consumption of meat is traditionally given up Brother Ron don’t eat that much meat anyway so there is no hardship there.

Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days in commemoration of the forty days which Jesus spent fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry being temptation by the Devil.

Brother Ron is not a saint or a priest I am just a simple man who loves god. Lent is a tourist trap for me. Because I am free to drive by lent but I didn’t, my imagination was captured by the advertisement and the lure of fasting so I am taking a little detour to help me focus.

Pray for me that I may find the narrow path that leads to the Divine Nature; God willing before I die.

i don’t understand what you mean by being free to drive by lent. i admire you for giving up television, but tell me, does utube fall into that catagory. also, i would like you to talk/write about yourself only in the first person. when you refer to yourself in the third person, you don’t seem like a real person.

  3. Thank you for the feedback I am writing about me however the abstraction of writing may not be considered real by some. So if I exist it is only your perception.

I am all I know. My experience is limited to me and what I have seen and what I have read. I ignorantly thought I was writing in the first person. I will have to be more careful.

I travel the journey of life in the eternal here and now, realizing I am not prepared for or even know where I am going except than I am on the road.

There are other travelers on the road who seem to know where they are going but will not slow down long enough for me ask them where.

I am constantly lured into tourist trips i.e… like Lent along the way by signs and advertisements promising adventure or some novelty I may never see again if I don’t stop.

After stopping at the tourist trap there is in most cases a cost to entry, an investment in time away from my journey or it cost me money to get in. The people who work there are trained to be friendly and courteous so my brief stay is pleasurable.

My journey to the divine nature is often stopped by side trips to tourist traps. Getting married, having children, working long hours to buy things I don’t really need. By having parents that get sick and die, going to war, going to school, and yes even going to church. Brief stops that rob the mind of the narrow path.

Lent is such a tourist trap; the time I take away from my journey to the divine nature is capturing my imagination. I wrongly think that by self sacrifice I can become closer to God.

I have the choice not to stop and participate in lent (Just drive by), but there is so much confusion in my thoughts that a brief stop may be good for me and help me on my way.

As far as YouTube goes from a legal standpoint it is an arguable issue, because YouTube might be considered to be TV by some and electronic media by others. Perception wise YouTube looks a lot like TV but I am not a Judge.
